My 10-day residency at Beihang University included a lecture and week-long workshop co-taught with Rebecca Bradley. The Speaking with Pictures residency was part of the month-long International Art Exchange and ended with a student exhibition on our last day.
This workshop included a short talk and hands-on making. Using their personal sketchbooks, illustrator attendees completed interview portraits, silhouette challenges and dynamic action drawing with scissors, paper and ink. By the end of this workshop, everyone had illustrated a new sketchbook cover.
Illustrator and educator Federico Jordan invited me to conduct workshops for a number of illustration undergraduate students during the Semana de Arte Diseño [Art Design Week].
As part of their professional development, this group of art teachers invited me to conduct a day-long workshop based on exercises found in Playing With Sketches. They created artwork using examples concentrating on collage, silhouette and collaborative Post-It note quilt exercises.
Invited by the Norman Rockwell Museum to conduct two workshops based on exercises from my book, Playing With Sketches.
The first workshop was a week-long daytime class. Each day began with a short talk to prompt the exercises that day. Attendees with various skill levels were challenged to create artwork using traditional and digital lessons including a collaborative Post-It note quilt, used book sketchbooks, drawing with an iPad, collage, blogging, and Photoshop manipulation.
The second event included an evening public lecture followed by a Drink-and-Draw using quick exercises from the book.
Because of my training in photography and varied career as a graphic designer, creative director, illustrator, educator, and entrepreneur, I was invited to the Miami Ad School to be in residence with their Art Direction majors.
A retrospective lecture and concept-building workshops were part of this
three-day residency.
As part of a week’s worth of events, I joined a number of visiting artist from around the world to give workshops or lecture students about Western illustration processes. This lecture gave attendees an advanced look at my then -upcoming book, Playing With Sketches.
